How to Choose a Web Design Company in Nigeria

Choosing a web design company in Nigeria feels a bit like choosing a school for your child. Everyone's brochure looks good, everyone says they care, and the real differences only show up months later when it is expensive to change your mind. The lists of "top 10 web design companies" you find online are not much help either. Many are written by the companies themselves.

Here is how to think about it if you are the one signing the cheque, and how to sort the companies that suit you from the ones that only look good on their own website.

Decide what kind of project this is before you start calling

Agencies specialise, even when they claim not to. Some do brand and design beautifully and outsource the code. Some are engineering-heavy and treat design as an afterthought. Some produce dozens of near-identical template sites a month, which is perfectly fine if you need exactly that.

Write half a page before you contact anyone: what the site is for, who will use it, what it needs to do, what you can spend and when you need it live. That page will do two things. It stops you from being sold something you do not need, and it lets you compare quotes on the same footing. Companies that get a vague brief send vague quotes.

What to look for in the portfolio

Do not judge by how pretty the homepage screenshots are. Judge by variety and by depth.

Has the company built something like yours before? A site for a hospital and a site for a clothing brand have almost nothing in common. Do their projects look like they were made for different clients, or does everything share the same layout with the colours swapped? Are the sites still online, still updated and still fast? Open three of them on your phone using mobile data.

If the company shows only big-name clients, ask what portion of the work they did. Working on one page of a large project is not the same as building it.

Meet the people who will do the work

A common pattern in agencies: a polished salesperson wins the project, and a junior developer you have never met builds it. That is not automatically bad, but you should know about it. Ask who your day-to-day contact will be, who is designing, who is coding, and whether you can speak to them before you sign.

Pay attention to how fast and how clearly they answer your early questions. The sales phase is when a company is on its best behaviour. If they are slow and vague now, imagine the middle of the project.

The process should be visible

Good companies can describe their process without looking it up. Roughly: they learn about your business, propose a structure, show you designs before any code is written, build in stages that you can review, test it, launch it and stay around for a while afterwards. Ask them to walk you through how it would go for your project.

Watch for how they handle feedback. You should get a defined number of revision rounds, a clear way to send comments (a shared document is fine) and a clear answer about what happens when you want something outside the original scope.

Read the contract for the boring parts

This is where trouble hides. A few items deserve real attention.

  • Ownership. Once you have paid, you should own the design and the code. Some companies keep ownership or lock you into hosting with them. Ask directly.
  • The domain. It should be registered in your name.
  • Payment schedule. Tied to milestones, not just dates.
  • What "done" means. A list of pages, features and tests, so nobody argues at the end.
  • After launch. How long they fix bugs at no charge, and what ongoing support costs.
  • Exit. What happens if you and the company part ways: can you take your site and go?

Be careful with the "guarantee"

Promises like "first page of Google in 30 days" should make you cautious. Search ranking depends on competition, content, links and time, and nobody controls it. A company that understands search will tell you what they can do, which is build a technically sound site with proper structure, and what they cannot control. That honesty is a good sign.

Likewise, watch for "unlimited revisions" and "delivery in 48 hours" on a full custom site. Occasionally true for tiny jobs, otherwise usually marketing.

Price is a signal, not a verdict

The cheapest quote and the most expensive quote are both worth questioning. If one is far below the others, find out what is missing: maybe design, testing, or support. If one is far above, ask what you are getting for it. Sometimes the answer is a genuinely better team. Sometimes it is a big office in Victoria Island. Compare what is included, not only the figure at the bottom. If you want a sense of what things usually cost, we wrote a plain breakdown of typical ranges.

Consider whether you need an agency at all

An honest question. If you are a small business that needs a professional presence, an agency doing a fully custom design might be more than you need. A well-built ready-made site, launched in days for a fraction of the price, can be a better business decision. Save the custom budget for when you have a specific requirement a template cannot meet.

That is a big part of why we built our own business website builder and offer custom development as a separate path. Some clients need one, some need the other, and some start with the first and move to the second once the business grows.

A short checklist to take into your calls

Have they built something similar? Do their live sites load well on your phone? Who exactly will work on your project? Do you own the code and the domain? Is payment tied to milestones? What support follows the launch? Can you speak to a past client? If they can answer all of those calmly, you are dealing with a company that has done this before.

If you would like to put us through the same questions, start a conversation. Tell us about your project and we will say plainly whether we are a good match.
