Facebook and Instagram Ads in Nigeria: What They Really Cost in Naira

"How much should I spend on Facebook ads?" is the first question most Nigerian business owners ask, and the answer is better than they expect. Advertising in Nigeria costs far less than in the US or Europe, and you can start with a few thousand naira a day. But cheap ads are easy to waste. This guide explains what ads really cost in naira, what you should expect for that money, and how to set a first budget that will not hurt if it fails.

First, how ads are billed

On Facebook and Instagram, which run in the same Meta ads system, you pay for attention, not for results. Three prices matter. CPM is what you pay for every thousand times your ad is shown. CPC is what you pay each time someone clicks. Cost per lead or cost per message is what you pay to get one enquiry. Your real goal is always the last one: how much does it cost to get a person to contact me?

What Nigerian prices look like

Based on 2026 reports from Nigerian agencies and ad guides, typical figures are:

  • CPM: about ₦450 to ₦5,000 per thousand views (roughly $0.35–$3.75).
  • CPC: about ₦30 to ₦300 per click (roughly $0.02–$0.23).
  • Cost per lead or message: about ₦500 to ₦5,000 or more, depending on what you sell.
  • Minimum daily budget: roughly ₦2,000–₦2,500 for naira accounts at the time of writing. Meta can change this, so check inside your account.

Nigeria is one of the cheaper countries for these ads. One vendor report puts average Facebook CPM near $1.50 in Nigeria against more than $20 in the US, though you should treat that as a rough comparison and not a promise. At about ₦1,330 to the dollar, ₦2,500 a day is about $1.90, or roughly €1.65.

Why your own cost can be higher

The ranges are wide for a reason. Selling fashion to a broad audience costs less per click than selling insurance to business owners. Competition rises before Christmas, Sallah and other busy seasons. A weak picture or a vague message makes people ignore your ad, and then the platform charges you more to reach them. A very small audience also costs more than a larger one.

A simple example, to make it real

This is an illustration and not a promise. Say you spend ₦3,000 a day for seven days. That is ₦21,000, about $16, or €14. If your clicks cost ₦100 each, you get around 210 clicks. If five out of every hundred people who click start a WhatsApp chat, that is about 10 chats. If two of those ten buy, you made two sales for ₦21,000. If each sale makes ₦6,000 profit, you earned ₦12,000 for ₦21,000 spent, so you lost money this week, but you also learned something. If your profit per sale is ₦25,000, the same result is a clear win. The point is to know your numbers before you spend.

Pick the right objective

Ads Manager asks what you want. For most small Nigerian sellers, "messages" (opens WhatsApp or Messenger) or "leads" works best, because people like to ask before they buy. "Traffic" sends people to a website, which only makes sense if the website is ready to sell. Avoid choosing "engagement" just to collect likes.

Boost button or Ads Manager?

The Boost button is quick, and it is fine for a first test. Ads Manager gives you more control over audience, placement and objective, and it shows better results data. Move to Ads Manager once you are comfortable.

Make your first ad simple

Use one clear picture or a short video of the product. Write one clear message: what you sell, the price or offer, and what to do next. Choose an audience by location, age and a couple of interests. Run one or two versions to see which gets more messages. Do not change everything every day. The system needs some time, often several days and a certain number of results, to learn who to show your ad to.

How to pay

Many Nigerian businesses pay for Meta ads in naira with a card or bank transfer, which is easier than platforms that want dollars. Check the current payment options inside your Ads Manager. Keep the payment method in your own name, and never give someone your card details in a chat.

Keep your ad account safe

Ad accounts are a common target for hackers because they have money attached. Turn on two-step login, keep admin access to yourself, and give anyone who helps you partner access. If something goes wrong, our guide on recovering a hijacked Facebook and Instagram ad account shows what to do.

Read your results the right way

After a week, ignore likes. Look at cost per message or lead, how many of those people actually answered you, and how many bought. If messages are cheap but nobody buys, the problem may be your price, your photos, or how slowly you reply. If messages are expensive, change the picture or the offer.

Before you spend a kobo on ads

Ads multiply what is already there. If people are confused about your price, if you take hours to reply, or if your page looks unreliable, ads will only send more people to a weak experience. Fix that first. Our guide on WhatsApp marketing covers the chat side, which is where ad leads are won or lost.

Common mistakes

Spending a large amount in the first week. Start small and test.

Judging an ad after one day. It usually takes several days to see a pattern.

Not knowing your profit per sale. Without it, you cannot tell whether a cost per lead is good or bad.

Short glossary

CPM: cost per thousand ad views. CPC: cost per click. Lead: a person who showed interest. Ad set: a group of ads with the same audience and budget.
